An exceptional Antwerp Baroque ebony and ebonised cabinet inset with painted copper panels with Old Testamentic scenes, ca. 1650 The two moulded-panel doors enclose a series of small drawers that encircle a small central door, behind which is an architectural interior with columns, arches, mirrors, and a parquet floor of ebony and bone cubes, the inside of the doors and all the drawers painted with scenes from the Old Testament. The concave top includes a compartment with a mirror. The whole rests on a plexi base. Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916), 'Jaguar Accroupi (Petit Modèle)', patinated bronze, cast by A.A. Hébrard, N° 18/51 Inscribed 'RBugatti', numbered '(18)', and stamped with the foundry mark 'CIRE PERDUE A.A. HÉBRARD'. Patinated bronze on the original oak base. Conceived circa 1908 and cast in bronze in a numbered edition of 51. Lot Essay The Italian sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti (1884–1916) had a close and enduring connection with the Antwerp Zoo, which played a defining role in his artistic career. After settling in Antwerp in 1907, he spent countless hours observing the zoo's animals, studying their anatomy, movements, and behaviour with remarkable attention to detail. The zoo became his open-air studio, providing inspiration for many of his most celebrated bronze sculptures. Rather than idealising his subjects, Bugatti sought to capture the individuality and vitality of each animal. His expressive sculptures of elephants, panthers, antelopes, monkeys, and other species are considered masterpieces of modern animal sculpture. Through Bugatti's work, the Antwerp Zoo became closely linked to his artistic legacy and is remembered as the place that inspired many of his celebrated animal sculptures. Bugatti's bond with the zoo was also deeply personal. During the First World War, severe food shortages forced the zoo to euthanise many of its animals. The loss profoundly affected the sculptor, who had come to know many of them through years of observation. This tragedy, together with other personal and financial difficulties, contributed to the depression that preceded his death in 1916. O. Smith of Ionia, Michigan; Candy Apple Red over black vinyl, deluxe interior; despatched new in Lime Gold. For 1968 Ford took the Shelby programme in hand: donor cars were built at Metuchen, New Jersey and converted by A. O. Smith at Ionia, Michigan, and for that one year they were sold as Shelby Cobras. Of the 4,450 Shelbys built for 1968, 1,053 were GT350 fastbacks. The warranty plate on this car reads body 63B, fastback with deluxe interior; colour code I, Lime Gold; trim 5AA; and a build date of 6 June 1968. The Shelby American World Registry records it shipped on 17 July 1968 to Stark Hickey Ford of Royal Oak, Michigan, and listed on a Shelby Automotive inventory of 31 July 1968. It came to Belgium through OET Alexander of Antwerp and was acquired by the present owner on 20 January 2000. Repainted in Candy Apple Red over the original Lime Gold; a manual steering box was fitted by a previous owner, the original power steering components accompanying the car. Recent work includes new brake cylinders and lines, cabin heaters, a NOS instrument panel and lenses, and a Mallory ignition. A wooden Yaka sculpture, Democratic Republic of the Congo, late 19th/ early 20thC (+) On a modern base. Traditionally, it was the various additions to the sculpted figure that determined the ritual function the object was to fulfill. Here, a tiny rectangular opening has been made in the statue's abdomen. Secured with four brass nails, it is paradoxically this small receptacle, serving as a container for the magical charge, that gives the object all its strength and power.
